چکیده

Cryoballoon ablation has been demonstrated to allow safe and effective isolation of pulmonary veins (PV) for the treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Recently, the second-generation cryoballoon device has been developed (Arctic Front Advance, Medtronic CryoCath LP) with improved cooling capabilities by increasing the number of refrigerant injectors, resulting in homogeneous cooling of the balloon surface. In contrast, the first-generation balloon is characterized by

Electromyographic monitoring for prevention of phrenic nerve palsy in second-generation cryoballoon procedures.

BACKGROUND Electromyography-guided phrenic nerve (PN) monitoring using a catheter positioned in a hepatic vein can aid in preventing phrenic nerve palsy (PNP) during cryoballoon ablation for atrial fibrillation. We wanted to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of PN monitoring during procedures using second-generation cryoballoons. METHODS AND RESULTS This study included 140 patients (43 wo...

Cryoballoon dysfunction indicated by abrupt temperature drop during atrial fibrillation ablation.

Pulmonary vein (PV) isolation remains the cornerstone of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. Cryoballoon ablation is shown to be non-inferior to radiofrequency ablation in terms of efficacy and safety among paroxysmal AF patients. In this case, we report an intraprocedural adverse event encountered during cryoballoon ablation. A 46-year-old male patient with symptomatic, paroxysmal AF underwent ...

Once Isolated, Always Isolated? Incidence and Characteristics of Pulmonary Vein Reconduction After Second-Generation Cryoballoon-Based Pulmonary Vein Isolation.

BACKGROUND The second-generation cryoballoon delivers effective pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) associated with superior 1-year clinical outcome. However, data on reconduction of previously isolated PV are sparse. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 421 patients underwent second-generation 28-mm cryoballoon-based PVI in 2 centers (St. George's hospital and Harburg hospital, Hamburg, Germany) betwee...

Pulmonary Vein Stenosis After Second-Generation Cryoballoon Ablation.

BACKGROUND Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVST) can occur after first-generation cryoballoon ablation. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, severity, and characteristics of PVST after second-generation cryoballoon ablation. METHODS In total, 103 patients underwent PV isolation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using second-generation cryoballoons with a single big-balloon 3-minute freeze tec...
